A Change Of Focus

Hopefully everyone had a great holiday, whichever one you happen to celebrate. When we last got together for this type of thing we were ending the cross season in style with the Cyclo-Claus race, pictures of which can be found at bob's redzonoe racing

but I can't pass the opportunity to post a picture of Schmeckle, post race(99% sure thats mud)

Or everyone's favorite heckler Ben Wilson in some striking stockings

and lastly, and leastly here's me getting worked on the "dirty santa" podium prizes(which were funnier than the rest of my holiday) that's me right before losing the pair of tires in a santa swap!

Where was I? Oh yeah, changing focus. So now that the highlarity of cyclocross season is behind us and most of you have scattered to the four corners(at least of jefferson county) It's time for long miles as we get ready for spring. Whats in store for me in the spring? Not totally sure yet, but it'll involve, bikes, long distances and maybe some running, though likely in a separate event. With the weather getting ugly, we took to the louisville loop yesterday, and from looking at facebook many of you did likewise.

Im posting the map since many local riders seem to look at me with blank expressions when I talk about the loop(granted it could be unrelated), but its a long 30ish mile bike path that keeps you away from traffic for most of its expanse. Not hilly, but a good ride if you take it to its ends. Some rode cross bikes, but since I tend to favor chubby tires on the road bike, I took the b'mer. Good company and a great longish ride. My main goals were to get the miles in and stay warm. Oh, and try to stay somewhere near my race weight, which I really challenged during the christmas roadtrip to the outlaws place in b'ham.

My focus is to enjoy the rides and some good food. The domestic goddess/total enabler aided in this with some home made black bean soup and an Allagash Grand Cru. Hopefully I can manage to ride outside more than on the triangular torture device(trainer), but that may involve more trails than roads. Not really a bad compromise though.

Im working on a pedal comparison, thats really more of a question. Stand by.

a prayer for Santa's birthday

As I try to learn as much as possible on this journey of the soul, I found this passage in honor of Santa's birthday tomorrow. I just hope it means as much to you as it does to me.
" And St. Attila raised his hand grenade up on high saying "O Lord bless this thy hand grenade that with it thou mayest blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy. " And the Lord did grin and people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orang-utans and breakfast cereals and fruit bats and..."
That's the heart of it. Special stuff, eh?
Have a safe and happy holiday.

cyclo-claus.....too many hand ups

I said "ups", damn people its christmas. I was waiting for depotjoe or schmeckle to post some pictures but as the holiday looms large I figured I'd go ahead and tell you what happened.
The weather was perfect for cross. Wet, snowy but not nearly as cold as Storm the Greens. The course was great including features like a split in the trail giving you options of high and techy or low and muddy. Candy Cane barriers and of course...the Dreidel O'Doom. The dreidel is a classic death spiral where you enter at one end and go in a clockwise direction into a 180 then counterclockwise out. In other words, big fun.

We had small but fun fields, with Ben Wilson and I doub ling up on the 4 and 3 races.

I shouldve done better than my 4th place in the 4 race but every lap found Marcus handing me more and more delicious treats! He killed me!
The total for a 4 lap race
1 cup of coffee(hot and blk)
1 cupcake
1 beer(porter, nice!)
1 napkin badly needed.
I may have actually gained weight while chasing RedZone kids on 303's and Dugasts. Get a mortgage kid.

It was a blast basically getting heckled by Mitchell, Mike and Marcus while Aaron and DepotJoe took pix and called the shots.

We lined up for the 3 race because it was a light field. I decided to diet in this race and only took a waffle(w nutella) and finished 3rd.

The podium prizes were even done "dirty santa" style. That's how I went from a pair of Hutchinsons to the largest mtb tire ever. Its going on the camry if it ever gets out of the shop.

Best handup of the day goes to the team of Marcus and Mary with a spoon of oatmeal being eaten...off the spoon!!!

Great race and hopefully an annual tradition.

I'll post pix as they come availabl.

In the meantime

Happy Everything from the LTP folks

Eva Bandman- The New Era of Louisville Cross Begins

bandman video

Here's a video from Marty Storch at Metro Parks showing the work thats already begun down at Eva Bandman, our new cyclocross home. Check it out and forgive a few mispronounciations, these guys are serious. If you watch to the end there are some great quotes from Simon Burey and a possible course map.

More will be forthcoming, but this is a great start.

Dreidel of Doom To Bring Old School Smackdown

Expect fire and brimstone levels of difficulty as the holiday cross comes to town. Cyclo-Claus is this Sunday and is said to feature a number of holiday themed...well...features. As usual, the christmas oriented features will make you feel warm and fuzzy and the hannukah related obstacles are based on suffering. Its just how we roll. Expect eggnog and potato latke handups(okay, that's just wishful thinking)
Come on out and get into the holiday spirit- redzone kids as the eight tiny(and fast) reindeer, bobrow as father cross-mas,and duane as the grinch w nevitt(schmeckle) as max(go rent it, I'm not helping you). I can see Fatty and Seiler battling it out as the Heatmiser and Coldmiser and of course me as the ghost of crossmas passed, and passed again.

Feel free to dress as whoever your favorite "winter holiday" character is. Extra points for anything winter solstice related.....gotta respect the pagans. Hell, we based a team on them.

See you all Sunday.
and to all a good night.

okay, you really want to know what happened?

starts out like a regular chilly race day right???

here is a triptych thru our day....remember, that tent took two people to put up.....

what could have caused such confusion and delay?????

woodford and carrot cake are a match made in heaven

and things ended up kinda like this.......................................

luckily our attorney advised us to have designated drivers..............im pretty sure cross season ended just in time.

Sharp Dressed Man

No, I dont know him either. Our good friend Aaron from the Mtn Bike Depot was in Moab helping Pua with a 24 hr mtn bike race and sawe this guy. He's in Moab, standing next to a bike with a bannana seat wearing an LTP shirt. I want to party with this cowboy......uhhhh, kinda, but not really. I do think its cool that we see LTP stuff all over. I cant tell you how many people walked past me at USGP wearing our stuff. Granted that number may be artificially doubled due to some evil brew provided by Fatty, but thats another story.

If you know this guy, tell him we're big fans.....big, big fans.....sigh.

a few more glimpses of the ovcx that that was

turn out the lights, this party's over

Turn out the lights, the party's over
They say that all good things must end,
So lets call it a night, the party's over
And tomorrow we'll start the same old thing again

Something about quoting Willie Nelson to close out
1. The OVCX Series
2. Storm the Greens
3. The final race at RRCC

I have to say that this weekend I saw this as more of a community than I ever have. Hell Im a relative newcomer and total interloper amongst the real athletes, but I watched people from all different teams and backgrounds come together to throw a party while a race was going on.

Saturday, Bobrow had us putting togehter the course. Picture Bob, Me Seiler half a billion redzone kids, The drs mandrola and everybody else you know driving stakes and rolling tape. Total, wonderful anarchy ensued. And it worked. Mr Garner and I took a few laps with David Loignon(oh Im gonna drop some names) while tallgirl and the seilerettes had fun laughing at my new "go-fast" feature.

Granted you'll all make fun because its not all carbon right? snobs.

Sunday morning came and it was cold as I've seen since brookside last year. We lined up in 25 degrees, giddy about racing for the state championship, glory and fun. I wish I could have seen Molnar pass guys with one leg after his pedal came out, but I have it on solid sober(sorta) authority that it happened.

Even though I crashed and didnt get the result I wanted, I hung out with all my cyclocross friends drank way too much beer, ate carrot cake chased with woodford(and I still dont know why) and watched everyone spiral out into a great time. Were people overly "happy"? you bet your ass. did someone do a few donuts in the fairway? I can't admit any knowledge of that sort of thing. But I would have cheered my lungs out if I had.

I spent time with the guys I raced against, sharing beers and laughs with the people I'd fought so hard on the racecourse. I spent time with lots of folks and enjoyed seeing so many of my teammates get medals as state champions.

I think I lost half a lung cheering for Oli as she outsprinted the ohio state champion for the outright win and tried to cheer for Sherri as hard as she cheered for all of us all year long.

Watching Seiler, Zack and ColoradoJoe ride off the back of the elite race passing beers back and forth(allegedly) may be the funniest thing I've seen in any type of race.

There was racing, wrestling(really) and the ugliest group photo Ive ever seen. why did Paul feel the need to hold me up like a newlywed in the picture? No idea.

You'll no doubt read great posts about it
here
SeeZanneRun and here
DrJohnM and probably lots of other places that Ive left out

Hey I don't want this to turn into a sloppy man-hug. I've made some amazing friends thru this silly sport. People I might have never known if not for falling for cyclocross. I hope everybody gets as much out of this as I have....and has the unlimited package for txting. whew.

We said good by to a place we all feel attached to. That doesnt mean we arent excited about what could be an amazing facility at bandman(actually, Im just dying to start a post with "this one time, at bandman" )

where was I? oh right, not letting this turn into a sloppy manhug. Screw it. I looked out at the sillyness, the racers and the families and the screwballs with the alchohol and saw a community. I laughed really hard and raced really hard at this place(and crashed in the same spot twice!) Im glad that I got to be a part of it.

Maybe some new pedals to help with the starts? yeah, thats it...........................................

More to come about other events, but this one needs to settle for a while. Mandrola said he's starting a chess team for the winter. I bet the rook crashes.

As the man said "tomorrow we'll start the same old thing again"

the nervous hours before

I never sleep before a race. can't do it. so here I sit at the keyboard waiting for the time that I can get to the course. all my rituals of packing and checking are done. Play with the dog, check for the gloves one more time. today is the final race of the season. Storm the Greens is not only the series finale, its the state championship and all of this is colored by the overarching knowledge that this is our last race at RRCC. bittersweet because our future is looking good, but it all adds to the day. Its funny, speaking w Seiler and Mandrola yesterday about blogging, you sit down and the time dissapears. hopefully this holds a little value.

More to come.......and tallgirl's bringing coffee!

Bittersweet farewell to RRCC - Some pre - STG thoughts and concerns (Doug)

So, an “ERA” comes to an end this weekend, as our season ends too. Storm the Greens, our OVCX Finale, coincides with our KY State Championship, and happens to be the last CX race ever at our “epic” River Road C.C. course. Another friend of mine who knows nothing about exercise, let alone Cyclocross (but with a good point), called me out and laughed that 4 years could be considered an “era”, but I have to say I have some sadness in my heart knowing this is our last race at RRCC.

Sappy crap aside, let’s get down to racing. I’ve got a bit of a problem (hopefully not too big). Biggest race of the year coming up (double points) and I haven’t been doing anything remotely active since Storm the Greens when I hurt my shoulder (all better btw). I’ve raced twice (marginally) in the last 6 weeks, which essentially constitutes the only exercise I’ve bothered to do at all during this time. I’ve gained (as of this morning) 11 lbs. since the USGP, and I’ve watched my placement in the overall standings go from 5th to 10th, while the guys who keep racing just keep getting better and better. Just a lazy stretch caused by a small injury, a little burnout, the “busy season” at work, and Thanksgiving holiday. No big deal, but maybe poor timing. As I’ve mentioned, I think I’m going to plan some things differently next year (I keep saying that).

Regardless, now we come down to the KY State Championship. What’s going to happen? The nice thing is that although I’m in 10th place overall, I’m actually the top ranked Kentuckian at the moment. The top 9 guys are all from either OH or IN, so they can go ahead and kick my ass like they’ve been doing all year. I’m not going to beat them in the overall, and they don’t count toward the State crown when they beat me on Sunday. Actually, 3 of those 8 guys aren’t even able to race this week, so as silly as it is, I might pass one or two of them in the overall. I’ll lose at least one spot too, though, because the only reason I’m the top KY dog is that Trevor has only raced 6 races (versus my 7). After this weekend, regardless of the race results, he will pass me in the overall standings. He’s got some really high scores posted in some of the last few races. Additionally, I think there are a few others who could also pass me up, depending on what happens Sunday. So, I’ll still probably finish somewhere between 9th and 11th overall like I though. Who cares? That’s not the prize we’re going for on Sunday.

Overall results notwithstanding, it’s down to me, Brian, Trevor, and Pope (the only 4 KY guys in the race, I think) for the State Championship. Fun. It’s a fight for probably 7th or 8th in the race, but the glory and title of KY State Champ, nonetheless. I’m not really sure what’s going to happen, actually. I believe we’ve all beat one another at one point during the year, so I think we’re closely matched and it may just come down to who is feeling better and who’s peaking on Sunday. I’m probably not in my BEST form right now with the lack of working out, but then again, I’m actually rested. If I can keep the endurance up at all, that may play to my advantage if the others are tired. My handling skills might be rusty, though (they’ve been pretty shaky the past two races), I’m just not sure. The course will make a big difference too, I think. Fast, flat (roadie) course, I typically don’t hang so well. Slower, more technical, tougher course, I do better (but for the aforementioned lack of handling practice). I think it’s really anybody’s race, and I’m excited to see what happens. Hopefully Brian and I can help each other early, to get into a good spot in line, then, depending on which of us is feeling better and which likes the course better, I’d imagine one of us will be able to make a stronger move and push the pace. We’ll have to keep an eye on Pope and Trevor the whole time, too, to see what they are doing and hopefully keep up with them. With 4 of us racing, and 3 podium spots for the State Championship, there’s bound to be at least one Rogue jersey in the podium picture.

Lastly, I am not one to resort to tricks and tactics normally, but for this special occasion I think it’s proper. Now don’t go overboard, I’m not going to actually train or practice, or even get on my bike (or clean or tune it), and I’m not going to cancel my plans to go out with friends Friday and Saturday nights. But, in lieu of any of that stuff, I’m going to bring a good luck horseshoe [mustache]. Now, like most of my cycling related endeavors, it’s pretty half-assed, but I’m thinking with how closely matched we all are, I just need a little extra luck to push me over the top (and something to keep my face warmer).

After the races, there’s a big “farewell” party for RRCC with overall awards, a bonfire and CC’s BBQ. I’ve got a few 750ml bottles of some fun beers to share, and I’m sure Fatty will bring some treasures, so regardless of what happens it’s going to be fun.

Guest Update from UCI Jingle Cross

My name is Bill Street and I'm a 24 year old college student from Wisconsin who races his bike as much as possible. I met Love the Pain at a USGP Cyclocross race after a little heckling from them in the Pro race. I was asked to do a guest update at some point this season to switch things up a little so here we go.

Friday night was my first ever cross race at night under lights and it was awesome! I was pretty pumped and for some reason found myself with a jitter or two before the start. The venue had giant spot lights brought in that did a great job of lighting the course as bright as day where it was shinning. A few spots were hard to see which made for some interesting racing to go along with the slip and slide mud covering the course. As usual Mt. Krumpit was a brutally long and steep run up to keep things interesting.
Telling your body its going to race at 7:30 at night in the dark through the mud and cold is not too easy. It helped to see the carnage from the previous races with countless derailleurs being ripped off and bikes hiding under layers of mud to get the blood flowing and adrenaline pumping. I can't explain it but I absolutely love and live for racing in nasty slick mud! The number of starters was in the upper 40's and looked to be some respectable competition. I decided to try something different and started a little easier to see if I could hang with a bigger group through the whole race. This proved to work a little better and I was sitting in with a group all the way to the bottom of Mt. Krumpet. Dialing tire pressure was a problem again with sections of hard fast pavement and slow slick mud. After a bike change things were going a lot faster again and I was able to catch back on and pass a couple dudes. All said and done I finished 25th and in the money!

If you ever get the chance come do the Jingle Cross Rock weekend of racing! It's always held at a great venue with steller courses that change daily. A really well run weekend with fun to be had by all as a racer or spectator.
