one of my friends left a box of moon pies at my house derby day. I cautiously circled the room, eyeing them like a shark eying his prey. tasty stuff but wayyy too fattening right? I should eat a clif bar before that ride. better for you right?
look at the numbers and its hard to say where the difference is. have we been fooled by the health and nutrition industry? on the face of it, the moonpie has fewer calories and a similar amount from fat. granted, the clif bar has a lot more vitamins and may be easier to keep in a jersey pocket.
whats the story? if you were waiting for me to drop the knowledge on you, im not totally sure what youre doing on this web site. Im working thru this one.....and Im having a moonpie while Im doing it. chocolate.
go ahead. hate me.
Im going to wait for dr john to post up on this...no, no. the OTHER dr john.

higher protein in the clif bar
youre right, 12g vs 4g....still not sold against but thats a valid point
try the little debbie fudge round. perfect price and it weighs in, in similar fashion.
little debbie? that woman could own me!!!! the oatmeal creme pies arent bad either..and may have a portability advantage.
how do the fudge rounds travel?
at least Id be motivated to get the calories in.
saturated fat, my boy -- that and fiber (not to mention the vitamins). gotta give the love to the moon pie, though -- mmmmmmm.
The hardest part is fitting that bottle of RC in your jersey pocket to wash down the moon pie. It's a Southern thing.
the saddest part is that im pretty sure only seiler and I remember what an rc is and why it goes with the moon pies......sigh.
The problem with the Clif Bar is that it has too many vitamins, fiber, and protein. It confuses the consumer. The Moon Pie doesn't have to have all of that "stuff." It is simple nature's goodness made by man for all of humanity. I do like an Oatmeal Creme pie. They have them at some century rest stops here in Alabama.
Dammit Milo you made me cry w that readin of the gospel!! Maybe the question isn't what "should" you eat, but what "would" you eat? Long tough ride....what gets you thru?
As a member of Team MoonPie, MoonPie's official ultrarunning team, you can say I'm more than a little biased. I've been eating MoonPies on long runs for several years. To me they are the perfect fuel for ultrarunners! They taste a heckuva lot better than the cardboard these "nutrition" companies try to pass off as food. They provide a good combination of simple sugars, for a quick boost in energy, plus complex carbs for energy over the long haul. They also "sit better" on my stomach than Clif Bars. In a short ultra, like a 50K, I eat a GU on the half-hour and a Mini MoonPie + an S-Cap on the hour. This plan has worked well for me. (BTW - Mini MoonPies fit in the pocket of my running shorts easier than PowerBars, Clif Bars, etc).
Wow we were on a roll, but I think the team moonpie guy stymied everyone. Hard to argue w an ultra marathoner, except maybe he's burning a few more calories than I am. He probably has to spend less time watching his intake of fats and sugars than a 42 year old age grouper. Damn fine points tho.
Grin,
Another huge Grin.
Seriously, the sugar police would say they are brothers, with little difference, like twins.
The clif bar burns slower (glycemic index is lower) due to its protein, and fiber.
It was years ago, riding by myself. I was dizzy, had cloudy vision, and without any power, twenty miles from home. The mother of all bonks. I had no money, and this was before the cell phone prominence. No money!!
I stopped at a Thronton's and begged for quarters. After I got two, I asked for more. With one dollar, I bought moon pie's sister, a little Debbie.
I wolfed it down, but its high glycemic index lasted me only a few miles, before the knock was back knocking.
Pure sugar devoid of protein or fiber is a hair better than diet Sunkist, but not much.
Good Post.
